Great discussion. It is driving me nuts to see Hughes jump right in while we have to wait for Bouch, Broberg, etc to develop. We hope Bouch becomes a top 4, Hughes is already a top pairing D. What a difference it makes to a team. I'm jealous and I cannot lie about it... Add Makar and the D in Dallas as well. We have not had a true top pairing #1 since Prongs. Getting it done by committee. Barrie will give us a dimension offensively we have not had in a long time and can teach the young guys. Hard to develop some of our talent on D without such a defenseman to learn from. Let's hope Jones and Bear can handle the defensive side of things. Nurse needs to earn his pay, I see Montour signed at 3.8 mil, Nurse makes almost 2 million more. Ryan Pullock is quite a bit better than Nurse and is signed for 5 mil. Nurse needs to be way better than he has been... Let's hope Larsson's back is fine now and that Russell stays healthy being a smaller body that takes a beating. We have lots of if's on defense... Lag is looking pretty good, but once again smoke and mirrors since he has not played enough NHL minutes. same here regarding jealous of Hughes and Makar, but they also make the occasional rookie mistake, the difference is they don't get crucified when it happens because their good far outweighs their bad (neither is exactly outstanding defensively either). You brought up Schultz but IMO he couldn't handle the pressure of expectations and every mistake was magnified and he crumbled. If we brought in bouch, i think the same would happen IMO, so glad they're being cautious and steady with him. Call it my "Bro" mance but Broberg looks to have the temperament to thrive just like Makar and Hughes and i think that's what caught the eye of KH and Tipp in the bubble. If covid wasn't f'ing up everything, I'd fully expect Broberg to make team and get sheltered mins and 2nd PP time this season, but because of Covid, they'll keep him in sweden (and quite rightly) for most of the year. Unfortunately, I dont believe there will be much improvement this year D-wise statistically, except maybe a bit more offencive production generated by Barrie, but watch out for 2022, when i think everything will start to come together (fingers crossed)

I forgot about the bidding war but yeah it was quite a coup when we got him and maybe the reason we got him was because MacT promised lots of mins IDK? It's hard to know what might have been but I genuinely feel sorry for any player that had to play for us in that S%^&*show we called a team, it could possibly have ruined several careers. In the end, schultz maxed out with the pens and won a cup but that was "above" his ceiling IMO and wasnt sustained.I dont think he'd have got that far with us and he's definitely on a sharp downward slope already now. Hope we never do that to another player's career ever!

I think Schultz is exactly what we thought he was. A good college or even AHL player that can't handle the NHL. he's proving it in Pittsburgh where he REALLY should be benefitting from his linemates and he just isn't. In fact other than one year in Pittsburgh his best production was in Edmonton. At the time of his signing no Oiler fan thought he was just a good College/AHL player that couldn’t handle the NHL. not the point. The point was that we basically ran him out of town because he was soft, lazy, and underproductive. Then he had one year tagging along on a productive line in Pittsburgh and SOME thought we didn't give him enough time to flourish in the NHL. The ones who rallied to see him gone from here were right. He's not a worthwhile NHL'er and he proves it.

Yup we all thought Coffey light was coming to lead us out of the basement, but it sure didn't take long for pretty much everybody to turn on him, that's what I was referring to.

IMO he is what we saw when he was here. On a much better team, he can be sheltered and that's what we couldn't do for him. I still see Bouchard developing well, and I think there's some 'shiny new toy syndrome' going on with Broberg. He has proved nothing in the NA game so it remains to be seen. I am confident that they'er noth going to be effective top4 dmen in the NHL and that is a great upside when we have Nurse and Bear already effective top4 players. Klefbom is a huge question mark, but if that breaks the right way, we'll be in good shape for a few years. I still think we've got something in Samorukov, thiough not as high ceiling as Bouch&Bro....which sounds like a crappy Kurt Russel cop comedy... Anyway....very encouraging signs on the defensive side.
