Sounds like a great idea but with the profits they'll earn we know every jersey will be splashed with ads. It kind of depends where the NHL would go with this. For example, in UK Soccer, the pro teams usually have an exclusive license with one company (they obv pay more for this privilage and its usually a founding sponsor). This means that there's only 1 LOGO on the shirt, albeit usually a pretty large one front and centre. However, some of these become quite collectible as they define a particular era for the franchise. If teams went with exclusive license deals and kept the logos a reasonable size (and kept them on the alternate jerseys), some fans might be drawn to this and pay a premium. In Europe, "Ice" hockey is not that big and so they have to find multiple sponsors to pay smaller amounts to generate any kind of income and that's why the look like walking billboards. The premier soccer version of advertising is far less intrusive imo and I dont think it would be too hard for the pro teams here to find a single large sponsor to pony up for an exclusive license deal. They already pay millions for the naming rights of stadiums and IMO, having your name plastered on Connor McD's shirt is a far more compelling advertisement for anyone (and yes this will mean that superstars like him will start making 2x3 times what they do now because the right to put your logo on his shirt would alone be worth 10's of millions to a franchise alone, far more than his current salary). My guess would be that the next step would be to make a "superstar exemption" to the salary cap in order to accommodate this. I agree, lots of options and interesting points you present. Knowing Bettman it will have to really benefit the NHL...lol.
