yup, nice to see a rumour come to fruition and you can never have too many goalie prospects. something that was a weakness is rapidly becoming a strength, we may have to use 1-2 as bargaining chips in the off season as i'm not sure we have enough room for everyone unless we can trade soup? I'm at a 70% chance they'll buy Campbell out. Especially with a new regime coming in, I'm sure Holland would probably buyout him out even if he were to stay. I think they do try to move him first. Even with 50% retention that's a better deal than a buyout. Campbell’s buyout would span six years, starting in 2024-25. The cap hit would be $1.1 million in 2024-25, $2.3 million in 2025-26, and $2.6 million in 2026-27 before leveling out at $1.5 million each of the three years following that. Total cost 10.5 million over 6 years Trading Campbell at 50% retention would cost 7.5 over 3 years. Throw in a sweetener if you have to, but to me that is the way to go IF you can find a trade partner

Buyout is just easier, if they can trade him they probably will. It's just unlikely. If someone offers say a 3rd rounder or decent mid prospect in exchange for Soup at 50%, I would do that deal. On the flip side, a dozen+ teams dont have their bonafide starter identified, so as a GM, would you pick up Soup at $2.5M for next 3yrs (a reasonable back-up salary) knowing he's a streaky hot and cold goalie who seems to now have his Mangiapane together (for time being)? Given there still aren't a lot of goalies available who have done anything of note in the NHL, its a pretty decent risk to take IMO. But yeah, if no one wants to dance, a buyout is 100% in control of oilers management and they have to do it There's little to no chance getting rid of Campbell turns into a net gain for the Oilers. Probably "future considerations" or if its a prospect, they're not in the league and they're over seas and not signing. Like the Puljarjvi trade.

At this point it's just highly unlikely, and we'll just have to wait til the offseason to see how that situation plays outs.

I'd still take this scenario at 50% retention if that's all someone offered and honestly i dont see why a GM desperately thin on goalies (and there are quite a few) wouldn't? but as yu say, we'll have to see how the off-season goes? Anything can happen, if we or someone else gets an injury the whole dynamic changes pretty quick

TBH if the "ask" is anything close to wanting a 2nd nvm a 1st AND 50% retention to take soup, then you go the buyout route. The way JC has rebounded and now has played fairly consistently for about 2 months in the AHL, i really dont think we should add anything to a 50% retention offer (maybe a late pick)? JC at $2.5M even as a back up is not a bad deal for any team with no goaltending depth and from an oiler pov, if no one likes that deal then the buyout terms are not that horrible. There's also tons of players out there who aren't playing up to their contract and a simple swap of under achiever for under achiever would also work, if we could get say a potential top 6 winger or depth D-man having a down year or so, who needs a change of scenery? It wouldn't solve the cap hit, but you could have a scenario where at least that $5M cap becomes a useful piece of the team

And they'll call him up for the playoffs so they'll have a plethora of Goalies, worst case scenario. They'll just Buyout Campbell's contract in the summer.

Worst case scenario is JC comes up for the playoffs and plays above Stew and Picks and we get the job done. He's played well, now coming up from the depths so see what happens. Like Markstrom, you never know what a goodl season can yield after a demotion. No buyout, no retention and other teams want him in exchange for assets instead of us giving up assets. JC is the Cinderella Man. He's not older like Markstrom so can see the potential there on a younger goalie playing much better and maybe figuring it out. Creds to JC, he is making strides after being down and out to having an NHL future.

Pickard get the back up, if anything happens and Campbell is watching upstairs with Rodrigue.

Soup fighting for a job, Picks fighting for it. None of our goalies are proven. Stew not being on par when the games count. Hendrique 4 playoff games, Carrick none. All of the above hungry. Hopefully this bodes well for us in getting character guys, the right ones. So far ok but unimpressive to be honest. In other words we don't have lightning in the bottle like Mohahan and Toffoli have had. Chance are we don't have to worry about them until the conference final. But we need to get there... would love Vegas to be out or to be in the conference for a 2nd wildcard spot. We don't face them or Colorado til later.

Henrique has 1 G 1 A, hitting, blocking shots, winning draws. Carrick 1 G, 2 fights, hitting, blocking shots. All while they adjust to a new team and the coach is currently juggling them to find their fit. Unimpressive - I disagree. 4 - Two super soft players, I'll pass. Just my humble opinion of course.

For now they are in their zone way too much, there are way too many shots against but necessarily grade A's. Let's give them some time. With all of this said we are one of the oldest and one of the slower teams in the NHL in terms of contenders. Can't lose sight of this as well. Have to find the right balance.
