Yeah we'll do good because we ride McDavid, Draisaitl, and Nurse like no tomorrow. But that only goes so far. If we want to be a real threat we need to replace AT LEAST half of our bottom six, add another top 6 winger, and another defender. That's, in my opinion, the bare minimum. Sent from my LE2110 using Tapatalk I agree with that and think that it is possible to accomplish this in 1 off season. Add a top 6 LW and another defender, as well as bottom 6 players - some of which we may already have. I dont think we're true contenders until both Bouchard and Broberg are up full time for 2 years. I'm not saying they're the difference makers, but they may be, I'm just using that as a time line. Sent from my LE2110 using Tapatalk

I never base any opinion on how near or far we are from contending. We are now making the playoffs “regularly” and as we see time and time again, once in, anything can happen. You talk as if every team in the league is 1-2 from contending except us? You think mtl are now a “perennial contender”?, I’ll bet you right now they don’t make the playoffs this season! They caught lightning in a bottle just like we did in 06 and flames did in 04 and just like us and flames, habs will come down to earth following reaching the final! I can count on 1 hand teams that are real contenders and no we are not in that group but we are in the next group of a dozen teams aiming to get into that group. I’m tired of reiterating that I hate this trade solely because it was badly handled by kh as he overpaid used up too much cap and even timed it wrong. I couldn’t care less if we were the last place team or just won the cup. This is plain and simple a bad deal. Not the worst, but not close to being a good or even ok deal. End of story!!

If the third round pick turns into a 2nd round pick - I can guarantee you that not only you, but everyone else who hates this trade (including me btw) will absolutely LOVE this trade. You do realize for that clause to kick in we have to be in the SC finals next year and Keith has to be a regular in our top 4 right? You seriously would complain about losing a 2nd round pick for that???

I do agree on the draft choice. I'm not sure why we had to throw in the 'sweetener' when we were actually doing them the favour by taking the whole cap hit. I know that one of the things KH was spewing, as well as other talking heads - was that it's a small circle (of GM's) and you don't want to get in the habit of 'ripping them off' cause if you do, eventually no one will want to do business with you. I guess taking Manning off their hands (PC move I know) wasn't good enough for them?? When do all these 'favours' you're doing for other teams start coming back our way? If it was Jones / Keith straight up, then ok. For the draft pick - they should have been forced to keep 1M. That, coupled with the loss of Jones' salary + Oscar going on LTIR would have meant a wash. We'd just have Keith in our lineup instead of Klef - and as already mentioned, if Klef was ready for the playoffs next year we could pull a Tampa Bay. I would have held my ground on that. I get the expansion draft argument (as in waiting until after) but I'm pretty sure Jones would have been taken by the Kraken and then we'd of have to of given up more to get Keith. First account was they wanted Samorukov or Dylan Holloway for Keith (plus salary retention) and weren't budging from a salary retention point of view. Now my fear is the NHL will award Chicago the 2nd round pick if Keith stays healthy in a top 4 role all year, regardless of what we do in the playoff a.k.a the Neal trade.

Like overpaying for a car and finding you can get it for thousands cheaper elsewhere. I also don’t deal in absolutes so kh has a chance to prove me wrong and I’d be ok to admit it if it turns out that other GMs would have gladly paid the price that kh did. Eventually We shall see how this all pans out in the end and in the end life will still go on whether or not oilers win a cup under kh or not. Peace out (then again, use your own salutations, I wouldn’t want to offend anyone 😉

No salary retension, I thought there was. Keith has had up and down years, last year was down, hopefully this will be better. Giving up both Jones and a 3rd with no salary retention is a bad trade for a guy at the end of a storied career.

Be careful, saying you approved of this trade, people will say kh has to get your ok first! Lol!! Fwiw, I actually like the idea of Keith on the oilers D but it’s all guesswork as to how it will pan out for us. Keith’s stats last few years have been bad, but he’s been forced to play top pair mins against the best on a pretty bad defensive team so will his stats become far more positive in a reduced role on a better team? I’m sure that’s what kh is banking on, along with his experience helping the team all round to be better. But there are no guarantees this happens and IMO the cap hit puts this into a high risk with only slight chance of high reward and far greater odds that time catches up with him and that the $5.4 and 3rd pick could have been better spent elsewhere. I’m curious to see what suter gets on a new deal, I’m pretty sure Chara won’t get more than the $2M he got last year and to me, these are the Keith comparables and they would not have cost anything in the way of picks or prospects. And if that rumour is true that bowman wanted Holloway, then I’d have not only hung up, I’d have blocked his number, amd erased all contact info. That would have put this trade into all world bad stratosphere!!

Can't say I can disagree with anything you've said, and no KH did not seek my approval first because I wouldn't have approved it upon reflection and the details. IMO. Leadership is a wildcard but I think Toews was the leader is Chicago, last thing Edmonton needs is another "leader by example". Sometimes a guy that speaks up is needed. See, I can admit when I was wrong!!! LOL I hope for Edmonton's sake that Keith has a very good year. I am surprised KH went after another fast and smaller defenseman. Edmonton has too many of them right now. If you look at the 2 finalist teams this year they have big fast defenseman with goaltending.

That would have put this trade into all world bad stratosphere!! Keith Yandle now being bought out as well. That's another sort of comparable. I've heard that Vegas is already kicking tires on Suter - and though he will sign for a lot less than Keith don't forget he (has is it 8 years?) the buyout value you need to add to it (not just a straight salary). I'm hoping that DK is really motivated to prove everyone wrong. Another comparable (age and fitness wise) we can compare Keith to is Gio down in Cowtown. Same age and Gio played well last year (maybe not to his contract but he wasn't an Andrew Ference). I guess we'll have to see how it all shakes out in October once the roster is finalized. I'm still hoping for a Kas to NYR trade (for Georgiev)

I also open myself up to criticism such as yours and I'm fine with that also. Ironically, both KH and tippett's tenure started off strong and i was full of praise for both, but as they've continued, especially KH, i have seen more bad than good. I didnt expect Kh to perform miracles when he came in but I thought looch for neal was genius and still do. AA and green were big swings and misses (can anyone seriously argue that)?, the rest has mostly been thumb-twiddling until now, because he had no cap to do anything. now that he has, i think his first move was an overpayment (as does the majority of the hockey world), others disagree and a debate has followed. It's probably gotten more ink than it should because we're all craving hockey news of some kind and this was relatively speaking big news for oiler fans. As for "Get on Board", that literally means "Drink the koolaid" and I'll never succumb to that way of thinking, its not in my DNA! I'll continue to post my opinions here and they are just that, "opinions", both positive and negative. but the Day Bronc or any of the moderators state that only positive, warm, fuzzy thoughts are allowed here, then that will be the day I'll leave this board. Ironically i used to follow the old "official fan board but never signed up because criticism of oiler management wasnt allowed. This Board however allows criticism and is a fantastic place to find and see oiler news and opinions both good and bad. Personally, I prefer to hear both the pros and cons of any story so I can come up with my own conclusion and quite frankly I am absolutely sick to Death of the current state of the world's contrarian personality of it's "My way, or the Highway" with the "MY Way" being dictated by whoever controls the media. thankfully, as mediums go, this message board is as about free as it gets and if you dont like that then I suggest you may need to find a board a little less radical and more inline with the company line. I suggest go read Mark Spector's article on sportsnet site!

Holland was not the only one stung. Best games played by AA were his last 2, which arguably was when he started to feel comfortable with his role and the team was getting used to his play. The guy had 23 points in 47 games with the Kings this season. Which would put him just behind JP with less games and no CM to play with. Not great but not bad.
