So they cancelled the women’s world hockey championship and now have stopped access to the dressing rooms for media in the nhl. Other sports are playing games without fans.
The virus could significantly impact nhl revenues and affect the salary cap big time. I know this is insignificant next to the human cost of covid-19, but it will have an impact.
Figured there will be more discussion on this so it probably needs a thread.

It deserves a thread but hope it doesn't go viral Seriously though, it is likely to have major implications if it gets any worse. God forbid if any player/personnel catches it cos then everyone inc team mates and all staff would have to be quarantined for at least 2 weeks. How do you pull that off and still play?? U.S.A. is getting worse and it wont take much more for domestic flights to some cities to be cancelled. I know teams have private planes but How does that work for teams to cross borders?? The contingency plans I've heard about that say playing in alternate venues or behind closed doors are based on a "best case scenario" IMO, they dont factor in if a team is forced to cancel playing because someone on staff gets infected? Lots to think about! Lost revenue is way down the list IMO.

NBA just suspended their season.
Never mind the cap, we might not have a playoffs. A hockey Arena is just about the last place I'd want to be right now

You can be pretty sure they will suspend the season. IMO (almost) no sports league worldwide will finish their seasons.....sad but true....

I think they'll just suspend the season for a couple weeks. Of course we're in uncharted territory.

Suspended for now but I'm afraid the season will eventually be cancelled without playoff. The spread of the virus is still accelerating in the US/Canada so it will take more than a couple weeks to get it under control. The summer came early this week. Thanks China!

They could reevaluate in a month and just start the playoffs with the standings as is. It's not like we haven't had a shortened season before.

Maybe do a cut-off of standings as of the # of games played by the team with the least played.

I think they'll just suspend the season for a couple weeks. Of course we're in uncharted territory. if North America's approach to testing doesn't change, not a chance.
We've put lawyers in charge of a health crisis. We're not testing asymptomatic contacts (Korea did this, this is why their rate of testing is so high, and why they've managed to get things under control), just encouraging them to self-isolate. The US is charging people for the tests.
We are doing everything wrong.

Canada's testing is fine. It's the US that's messed up.

Canada's testing is fine. It's the US that's messed up. I would rank our response as -so far- in between the very good Korean response to the abysmal US response. Time will tell if its good enough; if too late to move, its the Italy path (ie. not good). you're more hopeful than I. Way too many people still traveling.

I'm about ready to fly down to Mexico for a few months before all flights get suspended lol. So far only 12 cases down there, 4 of them have recovered.

I think this season is over. The playoffs were supposed to start on April 6. If the rest of the regular season is cancelled and they restart the season with round 1 playoffs based on current standings that would need to happen no later than the first week of May. The league can't push the playoffs past July 1 due to the free agency deadline unless they move that too. I don't believe a shortened version of playoffs is an option since that would result in a Stanley Cup winner that would not have won the usual 16 games so there would always be that asterisk next to their names.
I'm expecting we will not see NHL hockey again until October. Also, with all the losses the league is going to incur over lost games I think the winter Olympics are become less and less probable for the NHLers especially since the games are in China in 2022.

Interesting point about China 2022, Grey.
There is no question this will be financially devastating - all of the resistance points in the markets are being shattered, everyone is heading to the exits simultaneously.
But everyone is hurting, so the question would be, at that point, is it better to send the players, in the name of restoring 'normalcy'?
The economy is basically a con-game- con meaning 'confidence.' People have to believe it is working for it to work. It requires a sense of normalcy. The Virus is shattering that sense. Millennial investors have never seen a crash like this, we don't know how they will respond in the long-term.

FWIW, just got back from OZ,They're about 2-3 weeks ahead of N.America in their responses, primarily because by far their biggest trading partner and over half the population is Chinese or Chinese descent. They are now starting to switch their response rationale from prevention to reduction. they've basically admitted that its "in the community" therefore the best course of action now is to treat it as a "very severe flu outbreak" and therefore exercise all the precautions and hygiene as necessary but more importantly, if you feel fine, you should start resuming normal activities with provisos of no large meetings, no gatherings of more than 250. In plain speak, not much to do to stop it now but to minimise its impact on the country's economy and go back to work and trying to live as normally as possible. My big caveat to that is; like Canada, Aus is a very big country with very small population and can "afford to take this kind of response" and I expect Canada to follow suit in a week or so. the U.S.A. however is a much different animal with much bigger population and much worse health care system and therefore it is likely to hit far more severely and with much bigger impact. This will undoubtedly mean that all N.A. sports will likely be cancelled for the season and the U.S. fallout will likely have massive spillover to Canada as they are by far our biggest trade partner and neighbour. I really do not expect to see any more hockey this year unfortunately.
