So the truth comes out so the NHL had to put a lid on it quickly and fire the guy. I say Peel is the fall guy for lots of poor calls that have been going on for years. Bad for him for getting busted but there is no way in hell that this was the only infraction or the only ref to commit it. I hope it creates pressure but the sad thing is the maximum effect is lost since we have no fans in the stands. Imagine thousands of people roasting the refs. Kuzmenko covid, I hope that every hockey fan of any NHL team remembers this!

Had to google it to get details, but thanks for the post. www.fox23.com/news/trending/nhl-referee-tim-peel-fired-after-hot-microphone-call-about-nashville-predators-penalty/65MVMOAJUVBY3N2DLZ53KCCJ6U/Agree 1000%. He just got caught releasing the NHL’s guidance to referees and that was his only sin. Refereeing is hard enough when you are human, but the number of times a ref, and not the infractions committed or not committed, contributes to the outcome of a game fails the eye test for calling games impartially. I have said that the only other league with as blatant, sometimes even scripted, influence is the WWE. But, just to play devil’s advocate with myself, this is an entertainment business. What happens if the refs don’t balance Mangiapane out? Does the outcomes become more predictable and boring? How does the Vegas betting factor in to this? Is there a website that rates ref’s games? Need more transparency.

This was one of the first things that I thought of. Fascinating to see how it goes.

What happens to McDavid day in day out is borderline criminal and ironically, if betting becomes a part of the NHL, there could be cases brought against the NHL that will state it is indeed criminal! Second irony, Betting companies wont want every valid penalty called against McDavid because that would make the outcomes too predictable and they could end up losing money (and yes folks that's what its all about in case you've been living under a rock somewhere). Therefore, IMO He may get a few more calls, but whatever the increase, it will be offset by the very type of marginal call that has highlighted this fiasco in the first place (Irony 3), they just wont be mic'ed up when it happens.

Nothing will change long term. Maybe for a month there will be a little less of the makeup calls but the league is happy with what is going on or they would have done something about it years ago. Anyone think they want the Oilers getting 10 power plays a game? Not a chance.
The league didn't even officially fire Peel all they said is he won't be working anymore games which would have been a whole month anyways given his last game was scheduled for April 25th. That pretty much says what they think about it. "Whoops we got caught better make it seem like we care." They are lucky it was Peel and not someone else where they would have had to hand out a real discipline to look like they cared. This was a move to sweep it under the carpet until people forget and move on to the next thing.

Tripping?
Did this deserve a game misconduct? It’s shoulder on shoulder

Tripping? Did this deserve a game misconduct? It’s shoulder on shoulder Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk The tripping penalty is ridiculous. How a ref standing a centre can make a call on a play that is behind the net that there is no possible way he can see what is going on is beyond me. It happens all the time and it is a joke. The second one I'd give some leeway to and chalk up to being kind of like hitting a defenceless receiver in football. The pass was gone, the guy was off balance and the hit was coming from behind so the player had no way to prepare himself for it. If he had been 2 feet closer to the boards that could have been ugly. I would guess the idea is to try and get guys to stop making hits like that before it leads to a horrible injury. Maybe a double minor would have been better but not sure if they can call that in an instance like that. Some of these calls are because the refs have an either or option. One is not serious enough and the other is too serious but they err on the side of caution. I kind of wish they could use their discretion on the game misconduct part of the 5 minute major.
