Training camp will be here before we know it. It seems like August just started and now it's over, training camp is just around the corner!
There is so much I'm looking forward to seeing.
What kind of shape are our returning core in?
What kind of shape are our new additions going to be in and how motivated are they to compete for something special? What kind of impact will they have on the players around them?
What do our prospects already in the system look like? Have they made much progress in the off season? Who will look ready to step up? Will Holloway make it hard to send him down and where do we see him eventually fitting on the team?
What do our new draft picks look like? We probably won't get to see them much in main camp so rookie camp will be the best chance to see the later picks. Will Bourgault stand out for his age and just how good do we think he might be someday?
Will we learn anything about our goaltending depth? Do they look better on the ice than some thought or will it still seem questionable?
What about questionable guys like Turris, is he going to make a case for himself? How will the Yamamoto soap opera play out?
As camp progresses will we get a feel for any chemistry between players ? We won't know for sure until they play in regular season games.

I also think Broberg and Holloway will be on the starting roster, not cause they "made the team" but because of the cap. I think it was Gregor saying that if they don't make the starting roster, some of their bonuses kick in, and their cap hits will be something like 1.3M. So, if they make the team those bonuses don't kick in.

I think Bouchard is a lock for the team barring some fluke accident or something. I'm pretty sure Holland made a comment or too about Bouchard being on the roster and I think Tippet made a couple of comments that sounded like that would happen also.

If Holloway were to impress to the point of making the team and actually being an impact player, he could make a huge difference in our team depth and potential to do damage in the post season. This of course is in conjunction with the rest of the team doing well also.

We don't have any other right shot D for him to compete with.

You know what I forgot all about that. Now that you mention it I do remember this. Bouchard is a lock this season.Holland also made the comment he was looking for another affordable veteran D signing for depth on the right side.(Sami Vatanen?) I have zero faith using Barrie on PK or in a lockdown role or seeing Ceci play 22 minutes a night.Right now Bouchard is a very important part on the right side. Whoever KH finds for RD depth,I would strongly consider dressing 7 D every night to insure Barrie's role is sheltered and Ceci's TOI doesn't get too high. Having Conner or Leon double shifting 5 on 5 isn't a bad scenerio either.

Read somewhere the other day that Holloway may not quite be ready for start of rookie camp due to injury or recovery (I can't recall) but it didn't sound like anything serious. Anxious to see him play. Welcome to Tyler Tullio, signed his ELC today. And Welcome to the Condors, Colin Chaulk, as he signed on as assistant coach for our junior club the other day. It's been a busy off-season for Ken the Pen. I'm ready to get this party started! GOG!!

With all the forward changes, where does that leave Benson, Marody, McLeod? Is their window closing/closed?
What will the new lines be?
Pilju showed a lot of potential last year. Will establish himself as a top player? Will he regress?
The goaltending situation is as murky as ever. As usual, I have no idea. Kosko shows up, plays great....who tf knows?
Hopefully the boys are ready to go, and there's competition at every position. This is the most interesting pre-season we've had in a while. Lets GO!!

Lets GO!! -I think Benson and Marody are on the outside looking in at this point and they'd really have to shine in camp to bump someone else from the roster (only so many spots). We'll have to wait and see. McLeod however has a clearer path imo as we are still looking to fill our 3C/4C positions and he has less competition. Everything I read is that he is NHL Ready but again, we'll see. I've seen a lot of mock line-ups from pundits and such and many seem to have McLeod penciled into the line-up. However, they are not our coach and TC hasn't even began so... -Would love to see JP take another step and keep progressing. Learn to use that big body of his more. He had a great season last year and I see nothing but upside with this kid. -Goaltending, yup you said it, who knows?! When does main camp open, anybody know?

I agree with your evaluation of our rookies and I'm stoked to see the competition to earn spots on the roster. I agree with you on Jesse, he has a lot of upside. After seeing that video of him training MMA, I'm feeling confident that he is trying to do the things that the coaching staff want him to do in order to improve and take that next step. I feel he has learned that important lesson that it takes hard work and determination to improve his skills so that he can become a star in the league. He has the size and skill to do it, now to sharpen those skills and learn how to use his size to his advantage. He probably has to learn how not to be intimidated and actually do the intimidating. There are a lot of big tough guys in the league that are quite intimidating and there are more as time goes on. That's why I was so happy to see the video, it shows him working at the different aspects he needs to improve on in order to be a better hockey player. Yeah, goaltending. I've got my fingers and toes crossed that we'll be alright this year. It might even be what we need to sort out what kind of tender depth we actually have. I'd love for one of our guys to grab the backup job and proceed as a work in progress that shows potential of better things to come. We can always dream. Smith has earned my trust as a solid starter, we just need him to stay healthy. Hopefully Smith can buy us time to sort out the position properly. I know Holland won't stop looking until he finds a quality goalie in his price range. I think main camp opens up in the last week of September. Around the 28th I thought I heard, but please don't hold me to that. There are so many new faces it will be hard to focus on one guy to see how he's doing. There are so many story lines I want to learn about that will impact the season that it's hard to keep track of them all.

Funny timing, but here's a good write up on McLeod. Encouraging words IMO oilersnation.com/2021/09/07/ons-2021-prospects-countdown-no-7-ryan-mcleod/Also, his countdown list are good info on each prospect. Fwiw he's got Benson at 11, and Marody at 12...time might be up for those dudes.

So, if he doesn't make the team he'll likely be lost for nothing.
