It does not surprise me that the Leafs are out in the first round. Offensive talent alone rarely does much in the playoffs. Character among other things are also a measure of whether a team succeeds in the playoffs.
Leafs acquired Gio. I as a Flames fan always respected Gio's talent and commitment to the team. I always wondered if the same commitment to winning was there. Gio learned from the best in Iggy in being a team leader that always said the right things off the ice and probably didn't say enough in the team dressing room. The gentleman's club... where everyone gets along.
The Flames fortunately got some players that make no apologies for running up scores or beating another team not only on the score board but will go in the corners and fight to defend a teammate no matter whether he is right or wrong. The Flames now have a Zadorov that will punish you with a big check and make no apologies and take no prisoners afterward. I said at the start of the season that Tkachuck will love this new team put together that will defend each other and not criticize each other. Tkachuck last year the rumor was players were "tired" of defending him in scuffles. He's also the first one there to defend his teammates, there should be no conditions for defending a teammate (especially in the playoffs if the time in the game and the score warrants it)
Toronto needs a culture change like Calgary did. They took on a lot of "gentlemen".

Offensive talent is what each of them went into the playoffs with and why they won their cups. Talent and character are not mutually exclusive.Leafs acquired Gio. Frankly both Calgary and Edmonton have suffered that same affliction over the last decade.

Frankly both Calgary and Edmonton have suffered that same affliction over the last decade. All of the teams you forementioned failed before becoming champs. They do not mind stomping on necks to win games... now. I think perhaps St. Louis is the outlier here. They stressed the importance of defense from the start with hard work and character. Given who their coach is, that is not much of a surprise. None of these teams make apologies once the playoffs start, and even before they start.

Every team though that has won in recent history except possibly the Kings has been a team primarily made up from offensive talent. My point was more to say that Offensive talent and character or heart are not mutually exclusive. It doesn't need to be one or the other. Some good teams can score, some good teams can play really hard and do whatever it takes to try to win. Great teams can do both.

You can always improve... offensively, psychologically, character, defense. It helps to have players and coaches that can challenge you and aren't intimidated by the player to improve.

Wow, Gio signs with Leafs for 800K. Leafs can't help but have a loaded lineup with support players not caring about salary.

Plus he's a native Torontonian. Apparently they offered him $1m and he asked to take $800k so they could spend it somewhere else. Him and Spezza have both said, in one form or another, "If they don't sign me here, I'm retiring" Must be nice.
