I remember people were saying we should have taken Quinn Hughes or Noah Dobson instead. I was estatic we got the Bouch instead. It's taken a while, but he's now becoming the player I was hoping for. And everything predicted in this video is becoming true:

It wasn't long ago we were calling him the shin-pad assassin, but now more often than not, his shots get through and on target, largely i think because he gives himself that extra 0.5 second to move into a better shooting lane. It may just be because he's gaining experience on the PP now that Barrie is gone and he's become more comfortable after taking over the #1QB PP position. Undoubtedly EK's presence has a lot to do with his growing confidence as well! Can't wait to see Broberg mature on similar upward projection (Hopefully)

Now what is the holdup here? Evan, you have proven for 1/4 of a season you can quarterback a PP and are a decent compliment to a good all around D-man. Everyone knows how much cash Oilers have available. Get it done already. Or is Ken trying to make a trade to fit you in long term, if so, Ken get it done already.

Is it good to have Evan Bouchard playing 20+ per night?

He wouldn’t get a min wage offer from me after tonight’s performance? Everything he touched turned to Shiite. He was the leafs 1st star tonight, probably had 3-4 assists on leaf goals

Bouchard has never been great defensively, but has progressed. His offence has really blossomed though, and on balance I think he’s a positive. Know who else used to be like this? Paul Coffey. I remember a lot of times I cussed #7 for his defensive snafus. Huddy saved his reputation even more. Still glad we had Coffey, as I am with Bouchard.
He will still have a number of defensive miscues, but he should improve in that area too. He’s had some good games lately, but unfortunately tonight was not one of them (understatement of the year).

I just worry because I see the same problem that I saw in game 12 or 20.... Can we make him a winger? Phil Kessel was a net positive because he could just cruise around and shoot.

It’s a fair comment defensively. For me the offence on the back end outweighs his defence. Mostly it’s lack of intensity without the puck I see that costs us, but when he’s not panicking with the puck he doesn’t get enough credit for imo. Winger? We already have enough wingers who can’t play defence 😂.

The points are a mirage that everyone clings to to excuse his laziness and terrible d play but the truth is anyone half decent they put on the point on this team with the first line gets points. Nurse got them (how he got his ridiculous contract) Barrie got them and Bouchard gets them. Bouchard only has 9 more points (2 more games played) than Ekholm 5 on 5 this year and Bouch doesn't have to cover for his partners horrid defensive play all the time either. Bouchard racks up half his points on the PP which has been shown pretty much anyone can do on this team. Put Ekholm on the top PP instead f Bouch and their numbers would be reversed.

My biggest concern is how much money we may end up throwing at him? He’s elite offensively but terrible defensively. I’d argue we need the defense more than the offense so we could end up paying a premium for someone that isn’t critical to the success of this team? Nurse gets a lot of Mangiapane for his contract but I’d rather over pay for someone that won’t get pushed around in the playoffs. Barrie did Bouchard a job for $4m per year. If we give Bouch more than that (and we will) it’s an overpay for what I’d consider a luxury item. Bouchard will not win us a cup but having him at $7-8m per year could cost us one?

Going into today's games (March 30th):
Hughes 81pts (9 games left) Makar 78pts (9) Josi 76pts (9) Bouch 74pts (11) Hedman 70pts (10)
Evan is 7pts back of Quinn, 4 of Cale, 2 of Roman. Can Bouch claim 1st place here before all is said and done? Wouldn't that be something! Probably wouldn't be good from a contract negotiations standpoint for management though, haha. Meh! I'm rooting for Doc!

I have been critical of Bouch at times but this does put it in perspective and is a great article. I read it earlier today and admit I was wrong.

I have been a proponent of Bouchard and asked people to see the potential. At this point I am looking for from him. He passes up too many opportunities to unleash the bomb. I don't expect a shutdown defensive game, but I think that he has the potential to lead the league in points by a defenseman. I think that he has more in him.

I don't expect a shutdown defensive game, but I think that he has the potential to lead the league in points by a defenseman. I think that he has more in him. The thing that bothers me (or is going to bother me), is that we should have tied him up contract-wise before handing him the "golden key to the Lambo" that is the oilers PP. Same thing happened with Nurse, he got extensive PP opportunity just prior to signing his massive contract and put up top 5 numbers! You're basically giving the agent an RPG before commencing negotiations while the GM is left holding a pocket knife! Has bouchard exceeded all expectations? absolutely! but he gets to play 95% with McDrai and 100% of time with Ekholm. The fancy stats link posted does not nearly factor enough into how much that has benefited his game. that's not taking anything away from his accomplishments because he still actually has to do the job and he's totally impressed me with how he's stepped up to the plate. The problem now is; how do you argue against giving him a $9-10M salary x 7-8 years? How bad is that contract going to look if McDrai are both gone in 2-3 yrs and arent driving the offense? Ekholm is also well past the wrong side of 30 and so how long will he keep up his elite play? If we had tied him up 2yrs ago at sub $5-6M for 5-8yrs, we'd be looking at a great contract now and reasonable return later on, regardless of what happens down the road. folks are going to say hindsight's 20-20 or its not KH's fault he had no money to sign the long term deal, but those are both B.S. Would it have been a gamble to give bouch a long term contract before trading Barrie away and letting him drive the PP? Absolutely, about the same type of gamble as giving Drai $8.5Mx8 after 1 really good season and playoffs. People keep forgetting, it's the GM's job to predict who's going to break out before they actually do, it's why they have their jobs! Giving Bouch an $80-90M now, is something any monkey can do!

LOL, Doc sometimes you are over the top and this is one of those times. You are without a doubt Holland's biggest critic, you rarely praise him and when you do you still get a dig in at him one way or another because you just can't help yourself, it kills you to say something good about him. So now Bouchard has surpassed expectations going into a new contract and because Holland's replacement is facing a large contract it gives you another opportunity to rip Holland a new one. Let's face it Doc, if Holland had given the young Bouchard a contract like you are suggesting, you would have been shouting from the rooftops that senile old Holland screwed up again with such a massive over payment of an unproven player. Also as it stands now the Oilers are barely under the cap, so look at all the other trades we would not have been able to make for the team we have right now. I can only imagine all the digs you would have hurled at Holland over Bouchard's present contract duration. I have to give it to you though Doc, you are entertaining!
