more coasters than 6-flags but a lot less exciting ! We cannot defend a lead- this has been a problem since forever and what it means is that when the oilers go up a goal or even 2, the other team is still confident they'll get their chances and goals so keep pressing, whereas with the elite teams, you might as well save your energy, mail it in, cos you know you're not getting back into the game! I presume this is what the "new D-system" was intended to do, be a lockdown and eliminate grade A chances? The problem is, I dont think we have the personnel to run a system like this? The coaching staff might have been fooled by pre-season results when everyone is 1/2-assing it, but now that its gotten real, our team just cant seem to defend, or make teams pay a heavy price to go to the net? With the exception of maybe EK and Nurse, our D is as soft as butter on Bondi! As for the forwards, especially those who havent won a Hart recently, there's only one check they know and it isnt the back check! The basic most elementary idea of building a hockey team is that it has 4 lines, a 13th forward, 3 defensive pairings with a 7th D-man and 2 goalies. Nothing that the Oilers have accomplished demonstrates that they are above this. The 4th line needs to provide energy at the very least. Agree, but have we had more than a 21 man roster since KH took charge? I sometimes feel the "apathy" that seems to plague this team is in part due to them knowing we are too cap-strapped to bring up guys or send down guys who dont perform and give 100%? Not sure if this is the case, but there are definitely guys on this team who play like their jobs and positions are 110% guaranteed regardless of whether they "try" or not?

Not sure if this is the case, but there are definitely guys on this team who play like their jobs and positions are 110% guaranteed regardless of whether they "try" or not? True. Part of the problem is management. KH has improved this team and cleaned up a PC mess but the inability to have a full roster is problematic on several levels. Shaving a 100k here and there instead of giving away a 100k here and there is the difference for another roster spot to create some internal competition and accountability. Woody has also been good for the team until now but he needs to step up and realize what he has instead of forcing a round peg into a square hole. Having a deep and well balanced roster allows the coach to implement a standard system. The Oilers are not that. It will likely never happen, but, Woodcroft should establish constant lines and construct systems for each that compliments their strengths. I believe that the players care about winning but their play sure does not reflect that. So far I am seeing low percentage passes, weak back checking, lack of physicality, an inability to figure out how to play a 2 on 1 both offensively and defensively, and generally an individualistic approach instead of team chemistry.

Tonight there will be another big game and judging from how the season has gone so far, it's not looking good. I'll admit I'm at a loss to explain how badly the Oilers have played as a team. It's easy to see more is needed. More compete, more intensity, more caring for your teammates and your jersey. More give a damn.
I don't know how the game will play out or who will win, but I will make one prediction from what I saw from last game. Last game I saw Leon with that look of determination that usually ends up with him scoring or setting up a goal or two. He didn't quite make it last game, but the drive was there. So I feel confident to predict that Leon will have a big game and lead the Oilers to at least a more balanced game. After that we have to hope Leon sparks the rest of the team to bigger and better things, maybe even a win. Pretty sad that we're at this point when we should be just tuning up the engine instead of wondering if we have the right parts.

AAA ++++++++++ prospects...
Woody says our D system is fine, it's individual mistakes and not strong enough on the coverage. Reagardless, to implement the system he wants you need all 5 players on the ice working in cohesion. Every shift there is at least 1 or more players that look in la la land, not covering guys, not getting in lanes to stop the cross passes that are killing us, no blocks, etc. Not working together like it's 2nd nature.
It seems to be getting worse, not better. All training camp, 8 preseason games and now 7 regular season games. That should be enough and the players/team should be coming together by now. If the system does not work (even though on paper with the players we have it should work, but in actuality it is not) then go back to what works. Giving up way too many chances.
Half of our team has not points. That's 9 out of the 19 players. Eks and Ceci have 1 point. That's 11 out of 19 players with 1 point or less. Bouch is over a point a game which is good but even with that he's a -8 lol. And we are stuck with them. We can't bench players given our roster but we sure can send players down... Peterson, Lavoie, Gleason, Neimo/Kemp... they can't play any worse.
Going to give Mcleod more time I guess but he is doing nothing, did nothing in the playoffs and the last half of last season. Wish we had signed Bjukstad instead and said this many times.
Again, the new system may be fine but we may not have the team to play this system. Or some of the players just can't. It's a passive defensive system that sacrifices some offense so that we allow LESS goals against, Clearly that's not working. We have aggressive offensive players, asking them to play passive may not be the best way to go. Especially when it's not working...

Been saying this for awhile, there’s a disconnect between who we have and what Woody is trying to implement? To add to the above, you need players who will “scare/dare” the opponent to go into our blue paint and with exception of nurse and ek, none of the other D are remotely scary? It’s fine that Bouch and maybe Bro aren’t because they serve other primary roles, but Kulak and Ceci don’t have snarl and they don’t provide offence or quick outlets so they dont fit the system. It’s irrelevant as to whether they’re still decent D or not? As for our bottom 6, again no snarl. I dunno wtf Erne brings but when the only guy willing to get upset enough to drop gloves and get angry is your top line winger coming off a severe wrist injury, then something is F’d?? As for top 6, with McD out, teams put 2-3 players on Drai and dare him to pass to Janmark so they can have a good laugh 😂! Jan is a barely a 4th line pker, so why not keep him there and drop a lavoie, Bourgault or Holloway in that spot and see what they’ve got? Do you think they wouldn’t at least give it 110% if given that chance? There’s just too many gifted spots on this roster and too many players not scary enough or not scared enough of losing there jobs!

That's kinda the point Yuke, They're supposed to be projected to be potential top 6 not 3-4th line grinders, so why not try them there when a position opens up in top 6 due to injury like it has done right now, Instead of putting the janitor in? You are correct, The lack of toughness in bottom 6 is a big problem that isnt going to be fixed by those 2? Instead, it should have been fixed years ago and the second we did get one, we let him walk and instead wasted cap on Erne and re-signing a whole bunch of nothings. There's no guarantee kostin wouldn't become Kassian 2.0 (albeit $1.2M cheaper), but at least his mere presence is somewhat of a deterrent? Right now i get the feeling a lot of teams are licking their chops at the thought of going after our bottom 6 and they're certainly not afraid of our D either? It's been the same story for 8+yrs, all teams have to do is play 6-man D while McDrai are on the ice and then destroy us when 2nd,3rd,4th, lines come out! Since we have zero cap space for next year I dont see how it will change unless there are some major trades that ship out all these square pegs being mentioned and replace them with round ones for the same price? Either that or Woody's replaced with someone who can figure out a way to make these square pegs fit? I dont think that is the problem though as i'm Not sure there is a guy available thats capable of pulling off that trick? Knowing KH, he'll hire Babmale chicken!! He definitely fits all his criteria??

Erne is not the problem alone, neither is Ryan, Foegele, Holloway, Brown, Janmark. Those guys are not counted on scoring. That is for Nuge, Hyman, Draisaitl, Kane. The problem is cohesion. I don’t seem a complete TEAM effort. New system, as mentioned somewhere here, needs everyone to do their job. Unfortunately, brain farts ( most notable has been Bouchard) are happening way to often. The saying,' Guys are squeezing their sticks too hard' can also apply here. You don't come a game misconduct and a non 3 game suspension away from a cup with a crappy team.

We added Brown and Erne, but so far they've done nada and I'm not even sure that improving our forward depth was even an issue? Most would have said our D was a bigger problem or our Goaltending? Still time for those guys and others to turn their seasons around and still time for the D and G to get better as well, but if they dont, its another year of mcDrai down the tubes and how many more of those will we have left if this keeps up?

I am confident zero cups with man on man coverage like last year. Zone D will give us a better chance at that cup. What do you mean Brown and Erne add Nadda? Those boys are not weak on the puck and do not cough it up ( & yes Kostin was a wreck in our zone, Yammy was a simple push over)

I get Erne wasn’t brought in to be a pt getter but if you look at all the good teams, their bottom 6 contribute “something” and usually Are positive in GF cs GA. tbf, it’s not just on them, the whole team sucks and they’re caught in the middle of that, but they’re not doing anything Of consequence to move the needle in the right direction either?, maybe that will change and I’m hoping it will?

I predict Gagner will be up within 2 weeks. Chances are good he will be center #3. Mr.Knights boy McCleod deserves the demotion.

Doesn’t complain goes to the A and immediately contributes and mentors the young guys. I wouldn’t mind a bit of that in the big club tbh!

JP, Yammy now McCleod push for arbitration and end up worth half what they sign for By definition isn’t that what the GM’s job is? To know who’s worth a raise and who isn’t ? I’m presuming he let Kostin and Bjugstad walk because they wanted raises too and he “evaluated” them as not worth it? Versus deciding to pay JP, Yam and McLeod and thinking Erne could be a replacement for Kostin at half the price? Those are all his decisions, as is the decision to bring in Brown. Right now, some of those decisions are looking suspect. Will they look good or bad at the end of the season?🤷♂️idk but I think it will be fair to judge him on how we end up, he gets $5M to be better than everyone else after all?
