I know I'm early with this, but I'm looking forward to a good camp. I'm really hoping that the rookies and all Oilers for that matter, come into camp loaded for bear. In other words, big game hunting, looking for bigger and better things and hungry for it. These are the years that matter, we're in McDrai's prime and we need to reach the next level and that's cup hunting. Every Oiler should be gearing for this and for good reason, they need to be in a team state of mind. Winning takes everyone, the whole team, rookies to vets all on the same page.
OK, now that I vented I feel a little better. Bring on the camp!.

So, we really need to have a young forward step up. Whether he is bottom 6 or top 6. Holloway could be the key but as 1st rounders have shown (Pulj, Yammo) they have not stepped up to the plate. This Holloway guy can. Maybe Lavoie can too... Our playoff success depends on some of these young guns... 1990 should be what ultimately comes to mind. Joe Murphy, Adam Graves (from Windsor), Martin Gelinas. We need players at under 1 million. Or there will be no cups. Connor Brown is not going to be the saving grace, we need young players doing well also.

Is Soup still sorting through equipment choices?

Having a young forward step up is gravy but the way things currently stand, one or preferably both of those D need to step up, or become trade bait, cos our D is still not deep enough as it stands? And if the rumours are true that McLeod wants $2M+, and presuming Bouch gets $3.5M+, we wont be able to afford even a min wage 7th D-man at $800k? Personally, I think we should take a real long look at Bro with nurse or Ek at training camp and move the others around? IMO if Bro cant play well with one of our top guys, then he's not worth keeping any longer and need to trade while he still has decent value

Is Soup still sorting through equipment choices? That is a great question! If Skinner can improve and Soup can find his game, either or both could be one of the biggest difference makers between us winning a cup or not. My original sentiment about the whole team coming to camp in maximum shape is also valid. Windsor and Drtaf have good points about our young up and comers needing to make statements that certainly would help out in the big picture. Which brings me back to what an important and interesting camp it should be.

It’s going to come down to netminding in 2023-24 like it did in 2022-23. They get decent production and they can win the Stanley Cup.

I'm not denying that the defense was part of the problem, but your blind if you don't think that the goaltending could improve any. Skinner did a great job all season for a rookie tender, but to ignore that there is also much to improve in his game is missing the mark by a long shot.

Goaltending could be better but that isn't the reason we lost out. If guys were not allowed to shoot from high percentage areas they score less. Goaltenders shouldn't be counted on saving defensive players asses.

Our defence sucks. And I’m not talking just about the defence man. Our forwards have to buy in as well. Too many lazy line changes leaving our d out numbered as well as lazy back checks.

Do I have this right, Skinner lost us the playoffs? Seriously? without question he was a big part of it. Of the 28 goaltenders that played in the playoffs, Skinner ranked 21'st out of 28'th at .883%. And 5 of the 7 remaining goalies lower than him played less than 3 games each. He also ranked 23'd of 27 in goals against average at 3.68 He faced the 5'th most shots, and all 4 above him that faced more shots had a better save percentage. It was a team effort that blew it in the playoffs without question. But The way I see it, we had a rookie goalie that was overwhelmed by the rigors and pressure of the playoffs. He underperformed and we had a coaching staff that didn't recognize it (or didn't WANT to recognize it) and failed to make the right change to bring in Jack Campbell, the goalie that ranked second overall for goaltender stats in the playoffs. That one change COULD have been the difference in my opinion.

But, Skinner had a chance to be a hero and win us a few games, he did not. If Campbell failed on his start this conversation would be changed and the complaint would be, why start Campbell when Skinner got us there

I think it would have been viewed as the obvious choice, since Campbell was our only other option and the fact that he had performed well previously when given the chance in the playoffs. Another point about goaltending is that goaltenders have been known in the past to steal games even though their teams were being outplayed. It has happened, it just did not happen with us. All that being said, I think the way to look at it is like I started with in the first place. I hope the WHOLE TEAM comes to camp in great shape looking to make a statement this season and off season.

Patrick Roy would have argued that point back in the early nineties. Sometimes it just feels like goalies are unbeatable, and if you are lucky enough to have it happen in the playoffs it can make a team defense look much better than it actually was.

We all know we saw Skinner let in lots of weak goals in the playoffs, but putting that aside like Sharpie said our D has got to be better and the forwards HAVE to help. Ours is the only team in history it seems that doesn't understand you have to have goaltending and defending to win a championship.

What I'm having a hard time reconciling is... how the hell was our D not shat when they were in front of Campbell?
