Word is Barrie will likely test the market because he’ll be looking for long term contract and Holland may not be willing to give him a long term contract.

I would say Larsson and klef if he's healthy are our core. Barrie's goal was to come in and get points. He got that. There is one team who will pay him nicely for that. It's not out of the question that Seattle signs him, and that would count as our pick from us. Yes, I did forget to include Klef, but as you say, that is "if he is healthy". So currently as it stands, for Klef, Larsson, Kulikov, Koekoek, and to a certain extend Bouchard and Broberg, it is somewhat a list of ifs and buts..........with Barrie, we have the real deal, not the original James Neal real deal, but definitely an NHL real deal scoring PP quarterback defenseman, that has excelled past all other defenders in terms of scoring this season. When was the last time we had that? Just saying . This is all about money, Barrie is without doubt good enough, but is he cheap enough? Time will tell. As much as I would like to keep Barrie, we have to remember there is a budget to balance. Holland has a very interesting and important off season ahead of him. I'm soooo glad we're not depending on Chiarelli, he'd probably resign Koskinen to another extension.

Not sure where the "word" is coming from BUT he declined several more lucrative offers to sign with the Oilers this past season. I believe a similar situation may arise as long as the offer from the Oil is deemed fair by BOTH sides. Yes players want the monies BUT they want a Stanley Cup more so. Barrie might see the Oilers future is along that vane. Nuge is in a similar situation as far as the potential of that elusive Cup. KH will look after the best interests of the Oil I'm sure.

That would be the type of contract that allows us build a contender. Now if only Barrie, Nuge and Nurse could do the same.

We can hope for better, but prepare for a big increase on par with other #1 Dmen.

Sorry man. I wish you were right, but we have decades of contracts to prove that they don't want the Cup more than the big contract.

There is a lesson to be learned from Vancouver by players and managers as seen by them doing quite well last year, then letting several key players leave and now find themselves soon golfing instead of playing hockey. Greed and the demand to "get paid" will ultimately determine how good this team will be next year. It has been a long time since the Oilers have had some defensemen worthy of discussing a big pay increase. This is a good problem to have I suppose but personal success this year needs to be weighed against the fact that these players only saw 1/4 of the league. It is reasonable to expect some departures, like it or not.

It is reasonable to expect some departures, like it or not. As long as one of those departures first name is Mikko, that will do for me. Surely with the experience in the game that KH and DT have there can't be a way for our Finnish goalie to suit up for the Oilers next season. Buy the guy out, and whatever money we save, put towards the Tyson Barrie/RNH retention fund. And if one of Stalock, Skinner or Konavalov are not yet good enough, bring in AN Other to play alongside Mike Smith. Even if RNH and/or Tyson Barrie price themselves out of Edmonton, that will give KH a further almost 10m to play with, that is on top of other available funds. I hope they both play nicely with Ken Holland, but if they don't, the money can be spent in other directions, plus we have possibly Holloway and Lavoie up front to look forwards to, and Bouchard and Broberg and possibly Klef at the back. Not the end of the world if we go in a different direction from RNH and Barrie, but a different direction from Koskinen is an absolute must!

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk KH to Nurse's agent "So you want Drai's level of money, We'll certainly talk about that WHENEVER Darcell wins either the Hart or the Norris. Come see me when that happens. In the meantime here's 6.5M." See ya.

Nurse’s agent to KH $6.5M? Later Gator! Nurse is not only a core piece, he’s part of the holy trinity that is McD and Drai Nurse. They are our true leader group, you only have to watch their interactions to see that. You play hardball with nurse and you risk upsetting the trinity. Not sure even KH has the cabinets for that. Our best chance of a discount with nurse is playing nice with him and his agent otherwise it could really blow up in kh’s face

The thing about Nurse's upcoming contract is that each year he has improved and I don't think he is done improving yet. I believe we may just have the real deal here & I'm not talking about James Neal. Darnel is still adding tools to his arsenal and he'll continue to improve them as he polishes them with maturity and experience. The next contract he signs should be a long term and yes we want to keep it as affordable as possible, but we are going to have to pay a pretty hefty amount to keep him.

I'm just not sure of Drai's level of money. And I really do not want to lose Darnell after we've put all this time in with him. Hopefully, he wants to be part of the future of this club and will maybe soften his stance somewhat when it comes to contract time. Maybe 5 yrs @ 7 - 7.5M?

At the end of the day you can't load a team with $10 million contracts and the players need to realize that there is a difference between "getting paid" and building a good "TEAM". You don't win a cup by dissenting your team every time you taste a little success. A few guys, including McDavid and Draisaitl will need to make a little less than they could get if they wanted to go shopping for the biggest contract if they want to build a winning TEAM.

Yeah but did Draisaitl “take a little less” when he signed his contract? His career high was, I believe, 77 points (last year in his ELC). I do recall at the time everyone thought Chiarelli was insane signing LD to that 8.5M contract. Even the first year of this contract, he dropped down to 70 points. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
