My brother in-law used to love watching the Oilers... Was a pretty big fan. Says he can't anymore. Not so much because the Oilers were a pile of steaming shiz for literally 15 years, but mainly because he hates the way the NHL is officiated... It was the series against Anaheim is 2017 that ultimately made him stop. You know what? I don't blame him. Should I see another couple seasons in which McDavid gets tackled like a rugby player during the playoffs, I'll probably do the same. Pretty sad how there's a fair chance that this team may never win a cup during this new exciting era simply because this league's officiating is utterly broken. You would think protecting the NHL's biggest stars would do wonders for the league's marketing. Soccer fans had Youtube videos of themselves reacting to McDavid's goal against the Rangers shortly after that game! THAT is how you grow the game, you allow the players to do their stuff and score amazing goals that amaze the world without being hacked all the time or wearing enemy players like ****ing backpacks! Who knows what the ultimate result of the game in Winnipeg would of been if Connor and Leon drawed a penalties each? No matter how much this roster can be improved it might not even matter! That is if opposing teams with worse rosters than our's can be favored with less penalties to "level the playing field" or make things more "fair" or something stupid like that. McDavid is LITTERALY BEING PUNISHED FOR BEING THE BEST PLAYER ON THE PLANET. It's a sick joke and it needs to stop. I said it as well, I’m very close to giving up watching even though I love the game of hockey. When someone like Bieksa who hates the oilers says that McD should try being “nicer” to refs to get the calls then you know it’s bush league wwf reffing. The fact they all admitted that he doesn’t get the calls because A. He did good and B. oilers pp is so good, is proof the system is utterly broken and I ve said it before, it’s cheating plain and simple and I can’t watch a sport where cheating is endorsed by the league and encouraged by the officials. It better change or this league will evaporate. The stars are what fans pay to see, not the refs and some 4th line slug waterskiing behind a star Bieksa's mouth has always been twice the size of his brain so why should I care what he thinks? Can't believe so many people like him and take his words seriously. Like I said. 2 more years of this nonsense and I'm done! Shame how this wonderful game is being ruled (and being ruined) by a bunch of foolish bafoons that can't do their job properly. Clearly protecting the players isn't their priority. It's embarrassing to watch.

All great points and agree with everything (hard not to). Like what was said refs are people too and they don't want to give the Oilers an unfair advantage. So have to see it that way too.
What has not been mentioned is that these blatant fouls can cause injury. Many of them are very dangerous. So McD's health is the #1 priority.

We discussed it in GT thread last night. The refs dont hate us but they have fallen into the trap of "Controlling and Managing" the games and not reffing them. This may be because of "directives from above" to keep games close as possible, or it may just be human nature or how they've been trained? Ironically, I fall into the trap of counting the # of PP and say: "look we only get 2 per game, whereas other teams (especially bad ones like mtl and Van) get 6 per game", yet you'd expect the pp numbers to be lopsided if one team is sig better than the other, or if one team is way more physical than the other? Problem is, the refs try to "even up the count" like we do, and sometimes even tilt it towards the teams playing badly? This has to stop and refs will have to re-program themselves to just "ref the rules" and let the final score tell the tale. That will be very hard to do given how much "subjectivity" is in the rule book. If they don't however, the NHL will never attract new fan bases or rise above "novelty sport", or worse as you suggest, a star player is going to have his career ended or worse. Problem is; It's almost happened 2x to McD already and they've done absolutely nothing, so i'm not holding my breath that change will come any time soon.

But this thinking of theirs (not saying it's you Windsoroiler because I know it isn't) is completely wrong and Fogolin2 backwards. By not calling the rulebook they give the other team the unfair advantage. Sticking to the actual rules is never unfair. What is really happening here is the Oilers are being unfairly penalized by on ice officials for having the sheer audacity to be really good at one facet of the game. That isn't "fair", it is unfair, and frankly it's cheating. Calling the rules as they are stated in the official rulebook gives the Oilers an advantage for sure but it's a FAIR advantage, and that is exactly the point of having a rulebook. How would Toronto like it if to make the game more "fair" they took away Mathews stick? or went into tampa and tied Vaselevsky's legs together? Or into Calgary and removed one of Tkachuks skate blades?

Just for fun, I’d like to take one of our games and trip or hook an opposition player EVERY SHIFT, if not more. And when the refs arm is up, do it again. See how high we can get.
Make it so blatant every news media outlet plays it. And then in the post-game interviews just shrug it off as the way the game is played.

It's pretty simple the NHL doesn't want and has never wanted games decided by special teams or non 5 on 5 situations regardless of what it does to the integrity of the game. Hell they went as far as changing the rules in the 80's because the Oilers were too dominant 4 on 4, they allow the rules to be completely changed every year come playoffs, they award a point for losing in overtime3shootout. They are bound and determined to have the appearance of parity and nothing is going to change that other than losing fans and there are just as many fans at this point saying players should play through it as there are those complaining so that's not likely to happen anytime soon.

That's not what is happening here. If you think we are the only fan base that thinks the reffing in the NHL is garbage you are kidding yourself. You were right the first time iGibb, it's all about creating the perception of parity and every fan base complains about the reffing because every team at some point has seen their team penalized unfairly in order to try and "even up" both the scoreboard and penalty infractions, regardless if one team is overtly breaking more rules, or is much crappier than the other.
The Bias against Edmonton is not because they "hate us personally"' it's because our PP is orders of magnitude better than anyone else's and McD is orders of magnitude better than almost every other player and yes that correlates with the 80's oilers being orders of magnitude better than anyone else at 4-4. Unfortunately for the present day oilers, there is no simple fix such as eliminating coincidental minors, the only "fix" would be to give less PP chances to Edm and call less penalties on McD and that is exactly what is happening, So yeah, "the fix" is definitely in!

This is the only team that I've seen sports pundits, analysts, and former NHL officials and referees all agree that this is the one team being Kuzmenkoed over by officiating this year. So are they kidding themselves as well?

This is the only team that I've seen sports pundits, analysts, and former NHL officials and referees all agree that this is the one team being Flames sucked over by officiating this year. So are they kidding themselves as well? My wife is not a hockey fan and even she has said things like, "why isn't that a penalty?" And "did they really just get away with that?" And, "they are calling that a penalty but not the other one?" The missed calls are obvious even to a none hockey fan. This is why I cheer every time a ref gets hit hard by a puck, takes a punch in a scrum, or gets nailed in any way. I have lost so much respect for the officiating the I have come to like seeing them get hurt. I think that every time the opponent gets away with one the Oilers need a guy to pull a Bobby Hull and take a slap shot at the guy who committed the infraction. Line it up so it conceivably could be viewed as an actual shot attempt. Time to start policing the game themselves. If the rules are not to be called fairly well then it's time to find ways to play dirty. It has worked for cheep Huberdeaues like Perry, Bieksa, Getzlaf, Marchand, and others. I like Kassian, and the Oilers could use at least 2 other guys on the bottom 6 looking for a big hit as well as cheep shots.

Yep I'm a big proponent of "Don't get Mad, Get even" and if the theory is correct that refs aren't specifically bias against us, then they'll find a way to even things up if we start taking a lot of liberties (They just have to be a little less obvious than Benson last night). The problem is, do we have anyone besides Kass who can do this? I thought Foegele's M.O was to play a little on the edge but haven't seen that side yet, Nurse can but is way too valuable to lose to penalties. Holloway sounds like he could be one day, Maybe Kass can Give Benson lessons on how to throw a big hard check with a little side of subtle elbow?? Otherwise we'll have to go out and buy one

Oiler's management has official channels to the league and videos of games. It is far better to air grievances this way and with no public scrutiny to get this possibly resolved. I do find it difficult to believe that refs will let blatant acts go, such as examples of Gio and Tanev tripping McD. It's really the only recourse if their is unfairness.
I do feel the pain, when Wideman unexpectadly cross checked a linesman I too questioned many calls after that incident but kept it to myself and took my lumps. These calls did go away once Wideman was gone.
I'm seeing more and more cross checks go uncalled after its initial crackdown. Perhaps it's time for the league to revisit it's crackdown on officials calls and what is acceptable and what isn't.

The problem we fans have is they are seemingly not doing it.I do feel the pain, when Wideman unexpectadly cross checked a linesman I too questioned many calls after that incident but kept it to myself and took my lumps. Why have "crackdowns"? What's wrong with actually calling the rulebook as it's written? If they'd just do that there wouldn't be the issues we are seeing.

I used to have a soft spot for the Jets, because they occasionally took out the Flames for us during 80s playoffs. But after the last playoffs, and these past two games, it's like they're asking the Lames to move over and make room. And I remembered saying to myself last night, "Their antics are becoming 2011-Nucks bad!" And sure enough I find this little gem:

Was that the 1st penalty on Benson? The second one was just as funny against Pionk, nice acting job as well. Then they show him smirking on the bench.
What about the non call for holding the stick against Bouch and the Jets getting a good play out of it. Or the goal last game after taking down Ryan (injury, non call, costs us a goal) and best yet the non call for tripping up Hyman (the play he was down in the corner for several secs) during the double minor PK. Took his feet from out under him completely. No call, not even to even things up.
McD said he would shut his mouth. What should happen (more calls) probably won't. In fact, just for calling out the refs it's going to be the refs looking to call more penalties on us because of this, not the other way around.
We haven't even talked about the US teams and the original 6 teams getting favortism on penalties as well. Like what we saw in Boston...

Not sure if anyone saw the Tampa/Jersey game and cannot find the video but Point is out indefinitely. Sad to see. NHL has to do more to protect it's fast skilled players. Point did get a penalty shot but man that looked like it hurt.
So I'm less concerned with penalties on McD, don't want to see him get hurt. I give Stanley a lot of credit the other night. Beautiful goal. Stanley got beat and didn't try to do some sort of stupid knee jerk reaction

Beautiful goal. Stanley got beat and didn't try to do some sort of stupid knee jerk reaction This is what I'm afraid of as well, McD has already been taken out deliberately 2x and suffered major injuries, thankfully he hasn't had a major concussion yet but when the refs clearly dont call 90% of the infractions on him, how long before someone decides, hey, If i take out McD at the end of the season then my team wins the payoffs?? We're "lucky" that the NHL is being forced to be a little more "woke" and there aren't any "crawford"-like coaches (hopefully) still around who would actually tell a player to do this, but a 4-th line guy could see this as a ticket to stay in the league linger if he shows a coach he's willing to go to whatever lengths to stop him?? And what will be the consequences? 4th-line guy gives a shitty half-assed apology, maybe get a few games, the blind ref who did nothing will get ZERO repurcussions and the NHL will be "so sad, too bad" and carry on business as usual! Meanwhile the Oilers lose the best player of the last several decades, possible even in history and nothing will change. The NHL is clearly broken and I dont see any one in a position of powerwho wants to change it so it's almost inevitable that a tragedy like this will happen. From a very selfish fan standpoint, I just hope its not Leon or Connor that it happens to.
