There is absolutely no way that American fans would tolerate the level of lopsided calls that Canadian fans experience. Some Fog would probably bring a gun. It's not that the calls being made aren't calls, it's more so not calling those same calls the other way. On a different note, the play should be called dead if it hits an official. The officials already have too much of an impact on the game and having them get in the way of the play is just a nuisance. I have lost what little respect remained for the officials and cheer when I see a ref get hurt. I've thrown a ton of shiite at the refs this year and fully believe they manage and manipulate games, but last night's clearance by smitty was just an unfortunate hockey play and was a mistake by Smitty, he should have left that to nurse. IDK if he believes his own press about being the best puckhandling goalie in the game, but there are times to demonstrate it and times to let the D do their job. It's great when it works and gives us a 3 on1 like it did once last night (we didn't score), but it can bite you in the butt if it gets intercepted or doesn't leave the zone and that happened 1 too many times in this series. It's a live by sword, die by sword scenario and we died because 5 goals weren't enough on too many occasions in this year's playoffs I agree. There is almost never a reason for a goalie to be in the very corner of the rink playing a puck and an elimination game, trying to preserve your season when you have the lead in the third period is 100% not the time to be doing it. He just isn't good enough to win tight games on a consistent basis. Having said that he (and of course the rest of the team) took us farther than we have been in a LONG time but we need better goaltending to get to the next level and I am still concerned we don't have it.

Yeah, I dont want to rag on smitty cos the guy gave us everything he had which was a ton for a 41yr old, but IMO he's too emotionally charged to be an elite goalie and maybe a tad too arrogant as well? The best goalies look like they don't have a pulse and seem to barely move on most occasions but are fluid and graceful when they do. If a goal does go by them you dont show any emotions or gestures. Smitty has the mentality of a fourth line enforcer trying to rile everyone up and that actually may be good for the dressing room (the guys obviously love him), but its not what you want from a goalie IMO?

I made that post before Smith hit the ref with a clearing attempt. The conversion on Smith is a different matter. He had some great saves and made a few mistakes. I think he would be a good backup for Skinner. After 13 games this year Skinner had a better save % and GAA than the other 2. Maybe he can be ready to play 50 games with Smith as backup. As for f'ing refing, I saw numerous times when they impact the play by getting in the way both during the regular season and playoffs with various teams. The play should be called dead if it hits them. It would also eliminate the ref kicking it to a Bruin.

I dont disagree about the ref thing Neuf, in fact there is a rule in the book somewhere that the play can be called dead and i think bronc and I debated it a while back, but it says something like it has to go directly in after hitting the ref to be called back ie deflection or something? I think they should modify this to "if the deflection directly leads to a goal" ie prevents puck leaving zone and team scores because of that, such as in Smitty's case? My caveat to that is that it will introduce yet another rule "open to interpretation" and I think everyone here knows my view on how refs "interpret rules"

Or just call it a dead puck if it strikes a referee or a linesman

Or just call it a dead puck if it strikes a referee or a linesman Except the puck probably hits a ref or linesman 8-10 times during a game often with zero consequence so i dont think the NHL is keen to slow game down and add more stoppages. indeed, I could see a scenario where players under pressure in their own zone start directly firing the puck at refs just to get a stoppage of play, i'm sure the refs would love that so then what? you get a penalty for hitting the linesman (a la the deliberate puck over the glass)? No easy answer I'm afraid that doesnt involve some sort of "interpretation" by refs, but at leaast with my idea it would be reviewable if it leads to a goal?

The more I think on it, the only thing needed is for one American market asking for it for greater entertainment value. Officials would be scrambling like male chickenroaches in the light. 🏒🖕💥
