lots to give up, I would have thought there would be some retention on Ekholm with that much going back to them That was the problem with all the guys we were targeting teams are not going to retain for 3 or 4 years of contract. which is understandable for sure... in lieu of retention maybe they could have upped their 6'th to a second or something like that. Anyways the deal is done, and I unquestionably welcome Ekholm in to try and help fix this shambles of a defense.

Bouch certainly hasn't show anything this year that makes one believe he can replace Barrie effectively.

Not quite verified yet but being reported by Friedman: It's Ekholm and a sixth to EDM To NASH it's Tyson Barrie, Reid Schaefer, a first this year and a fourth. Not sure I like this deal. We rely on our PP and it falls off substantially when Barrie is not on it. This could be a major misstep. Ekholm better improve our defensive play a lot. On balance, I like the deal. I do wonder what the plan is for the pp, though? Nurse and Bouch both have offensive talent. Nurse has the wheels to recover on a blue line turnover, too. But both don’t think the game at the speed that’s necessary to zip it around on the pp. The Bouch bomb I look forward to, but I can see him getting pressured and turning the puck over a lot, at least to start. Broberg in a year or 2 maybe?

Or rather the coaches have to help him find it.

It seems a bit steep but gotta give to get and of all the D out there, this guy actually might be the one that best fits are actual need which is a d-man who actually knows how to play D ? I think bouch hasn't had a ton of opp on the 1st PP but probably will now, or I wouldnt mind nurse as well as he's familiar with the top PP group and with eckholm, we can dramatically reduce Nurse's 5-5 mins which might be a good thing? Also, i wonder how important this might be for broberg's growth/maturation to have a a fellow swede who really knows how to play D, and was brought up in a system that values D above all else (preds have been a top D factory). The X-factor in this is Schaefer and what he turns into? I'd have felt better if it was maybe a different prospect as Schaef is big/mean and we still dont have enough of that in our forwards or prospect system tbh?

Yes but it is there. We just have to find it. Or rather the coaches have to help him find it. He doesn't think the game fast enough. Teams figured him out quickly. So we should waive him or buy him out? Job of the coaches is cat and mouse. The opposition has adapted to him, now it’s our turn to adapt to what they are doing. Solve the problem. Even with a slow thinker, there are ways to get more out of them. You just have to set it up so it doesn’t require a lot of thought. Give him 2 options when he gets the puck. If he sees scenario 1 he does this. If he sees scenario 2 he does that. If neither, dump it in. As an example only.

Wowsers what a day! I'm Happy Happy! Good luck to Jesse in Carolina. Fun character player just couldn't find his way in Edmonton. Sail on young fella! Ekholm! Yes! He was the guy I wanted all along! He's much of what we need. He's had a bit of an off year but so have his former team the Preds as they have fallen off lately. However, Ekholm has been a consistent solid Dman his entire career and knows how to do his job. He'll clear space in front of our net, block shots, hit, and do what is needed and required of any good Dman on a regular basis, imo. I don't mind the cost in these trades as ya gotta give to get. As mentioned the biggest concern is filling the void Barrie will leave. Is Bouch ready? We are about to find out. This was the plan for him all along so now we'll see. Wish Barrie the best in Nashville, he's been having a helluva year for us and will be missed. Welcome to the Oilers Mattius (and that other guy )!! GO OILERS GO!!

I'll miss Barrie, but I can stomach the deal with Ekholm signed for the rest of this year and 3 after.
*Edit now I won't have to watch the first round of the draft this year.

I would be good with this if it wasn't just 250k retained. That's alot of money committed to Ekholm still.

Again it's the no retention part. Kane was just traded and its a conditional 2nd that become a 1st if the Rangers advance and a 4th. Hawks retain half his salary. AZ retains another 50% for a 3rd round pick. So a 10.5 million dollar rental player becomes 2.625 million. Mind you it's a rental. But even the Oilers could fit that under their cap. If you give up 2 first rounders in a trade be nice to have much more retention or use a 2nd or 3rd rounder for another team to retain.

He has been a solid defensive player and not missed very many games over his career telling me that he is durable and someone you can count on night in and night out. I really hope that he plays with Bouchard and we see the success witnessed with Keith. I like the player and the potential impact Ekholm may have on the Oilers. Barrie will be missed and Ekholm is welcomed. The trade itself will be measured as time passes. At first glance I think the price was too high because I think that Schaefer will be the type of player the Oilers will be looking for. Had this trade been bigger and included Sissons and Kulak I would think better of it. Preds retained 250k which is something I guess. Time will tell but I think KH missed an opportunity to do a bit more. The right wing is still a weakness and maybe this gets dealt with by the end of the week.
