The eastern playoff picture has been in focus for quite some time. The only battle being waged now is the fight for first overall. Hardly the basis for riveting writing.
A very different story in the Wild, Wild West where only three teams, the Avs, Wild and Flames, can still breathe without a respirator while seven others are fighting the current trying to keep their heads above water. Exciting stuff is it not?
The following is a breakdown of the remaining schedules for each of the water-treaders as they relate to the teams outcome for the year. Which teams will play lights out and which will play as if the lights are out?
Van Canucks: stick a fork in them. Got off to a slow start, fired the coach, made a valiant effort to get back into it but with 13 remaining and 8 against potential playoff bound teams, they don't have to go home but they can't stay here.
VGK: Like the Oilers, hit a rough patch that almost derailed their season but with 14 left and NINE of them against no-hope teams; now mostly healthy, they have the easiest path the post season despite my chagrin. There really is a "Tear in My Beer."
Oilers: It hurts me to say this but with 14 left and only 5 against the also-rans, we have the worst schedule of all remaining contenders. Fair to say, we're on a Highway Through Hell. Alas, there is hope as the Kings are 8 men short and as we've seen, the replacements can only hold the fort for so long. More in a minute...
LA Kings: Surprise team of the year IMHO. Did not expect their rebuild to come this far this fast. Of their remaining 13, they do have 7 against the wannabes but with 8 starters on the sidelines and six of their next seven against a mix of elite and bonified contenders, they might be swimming way upstream by the time their schedule softens. Bad luck at a the very worst time for them. Time for them to "Dream On" about next year.
Winn Jets: Who'd have thought? Hardly a stellar year but winners of their last three, they've become whispers in the conversation. Unfortunately, with a schedule similar to the Oilers, those whispers are likely to be drowned out by the noise ahead. "They're not gonna make it. NO, they ain't gonna make it"
Stars: Gah, I hate this team but with 17 games to go, they have TWELVE of the "should-win" variety. Of all the contenders, the Stars are most poised to make a giant leap in the standings. Like Miley says, "It's The Climb"
Predators: Bi-polar season. Horrible start but solid since the New Year. Problem for them is that with 14 to go, 8 of them are against giants including the Wild and Flames twice. It's almost fair to say that their season and ours could depend heavily on our Head to Head match up on April 14. Talk about a Crazy Train. "All Aboard, ha ha ha ha"
The Blues: seven of fourteen are against contenders but only one against the Avs could be penciled in as an expected loss. I see no reason not to expect them playing past April which is kind of OK... I like Gloria.
How I think it all ends up... here is my playoff prediction.
1. Avs (is there any doubt?) 2. Flames (Ugh) 3. Wild 4. Blues (could they catch the Wild?) 5. Stars (WC) (sick surge coming) 6. VGK (I wanna cry) 7. Oilers (Hang on to 3rd in Pacific) 8. Predators (WC)
Unless the Kings start getting healthy fast, I see them slipping out of the playoffs. I'd like to say I feel bad about that.... but I don't. In fact, I'm Singin' in the Rain.
What say you my fellow Pro-boarders?
P.S. for those who don't get all the music references, next time, be born earlier 😉.

In the past teams that had to fight to get in became teams that would go deep in the playoffs, due to being "playoff tough" just to get in they had to play that type of hockey. However I guess we'll see.

Great thread one-bit. I pretty much agree with your analogy and also love the references haha, well played sir! I think we go 8-6-0 to close out the season. I'm somewhere in between you and bronc I guess. I see the Pacific playing out as: 1- Flamers 2- Oilers 3- Knights Kings will lose by a Caddis hair to the wildcards, both coming from the Central division, those being the Preds and/or Stars and Blues as they battle for their own playoff positioning within their own division: 1- Avs 2-Wild 3-Blues WC 1 -Preds 2- Stars Did somebody say playoffs? This be our focus.. GOG!!

Hope this thread isn't premature like the contending team thread. Looks like we need to finish top 3 in the Pacific, WC berth would be tough.

Exactly my thoughts..........when discussing the NHL, phrases like "easiest path", and "also rans", and "should win" are to use another phrase "playing with fire"... . A lot of effort by onebit went into the post though, but the only thing we know for sure is that the three teams in our division that end up with the most points will be in the play offs.

I appreciate that this is weird for a hockey fan but, I'm not a superstitious person. Also, I don't think I'm important enough to the hockey gods for them to alter future events based on something I've said ergo... we should be safe 😉

Top 3 in each division HAVE to make it. Nashville and Dallas can both have more points than us, but we would make it in as top 3 while they would only be able to take the wildcard spots. We either pass LAK or stay ahead of Vegas and we are in, regardless of what anybody in the Central does.

Like I said, we have multiple paths to the playoffs thanks to the Pacifics top teams being weaker than the Central. All 8 teams in the central can be better than us, but only the top 3 make non wildcard playoff spots, the other three have to go to the pacific. As of today as long as we either stay ahead of Vegas or Dallas, or pass LAK or Nashville we are in. Vegas : We lead them by 3 points and we have 1 game in hand Dallas : We lead them by 4 points, they have 3 games in hand LAK : They lead us by 1 point, and we have 1 game in hand Nashville : They lead us by 1 point, they have 1 game in hand

Find ways to win and the rest is moot. I agree with Pilotte, being already in playoff mode could serve us well once the dance begins.

Well if you needed another reason to hate Calgary, they just lost to LA.

Well if you needed another reason to hate Calgary, they just lost to LA. However, my opinion is that LA looked to be the better of the two teams..........and apparently, according to the OP, they have 8 players missing.... .......let's hope they don't get a full squad once the play offs come round......assuming of course that we would care.

Yep we are too quick to say we are fine. I want to be positive and not thread crap. I also have some superstitions like not putting the cart before the horse.
Glad we are playing meaningful hockey, we have a tough schedule to finish the season, as happy pointed out Vegas has an easy schedule. We win our games we are in but they are almost all tough games. LA is battling and getting points in almost all of their games. Not much else to say, it's going to be a battle. Odds favor the teams with an easier schedule.

Yep, I never count my playoff spots before they Hatch! LA,LV and DAL are all rounding into form and aint going to be dropping too many points. Onus is on us not to drop too many either. It will be a dogfight, but I kinda agree with the sentiment, if we make it, the battle to get there might make us more ready for the playoffs than we have been in the last few years??

Fellas, it's a prediction thread. I don't think anybody is preemptively moving beads on the abacus. Just making our most "educated" prognostications.

I didn't say we are fine, and I didn't intend for it to sound like we are. What I am saying is that this team controls it's own destiny this year. We don't have to rely on another team to win or lose in order to put us into the picture, we are already there.
