It's possible, maybe even probable, but then why wouldn't offer sheets happen far more often if agents could just go around fielding offers from teams? if that was really the case then I'd doubt any RFA would settle for the "min wage" offers they so often receive from the team holding their rights? Ironically, this lends to my argument that this business should have been taken care of a lot sooner, before other teams can really explore the possibility of offer sheeting highly regarded RFAs? I actually do wonder if teams will now treat signing RFAs differently and put more emphasis on locking them up sooner? I think there's been a league-wide blasé attitude towards RFAs and the possibility of offer sheets because they have been so rare, but every year there are some pretty high end RFAs available and contending teams tight against the cap (like oilers) are particularly vulnerable to OS since any team with cap to spare could do what STL did and offer $4.5M to an RFA knowing the comp is a measly 2nd rounder? If OS's start increasing, I think the league will have to re-evaluate the relative compensation for OS's because they're supposed to be a deterrent, but if you can pick up a player on the cusp of being a star for a 2nd rounder then teams would be actually stupid not to do so? You should listen to the Blues GM interview. No point in offering if they can be matched. Detroit has a couple very good RFAs but they have 17 million set aside. GMs don't want to drive up the prices and that will happen it they get matched agree there's no point making an offer that will be easily matched. That's what MTL did with AHO and canes said thanks, we'll happily match!! Seider and Raymond are at the same level as AHO imo, or at least way beyond hollybro and so we'd be talking considerably more for an OS and therefore considerably more in compensation. my point above is that "contenders" are the ones most likely to be vulnerable as it goes hand in hand that contenders are usually close to being capped out (like us). For someone to OS either raymond or Seider NVM both, they'd be looking at min $7M and $8M each and that would be around what the redwings would be more than glad to pay anyway if Beniers shiny new contract is anything to go by? That means any team would have to give up a 1st 2nd and 3rd for each of them (TBH I'd be willing to give that up if i could get Seider). Detroit isnt contending yet and no doubt have precisely set that cap aside so as to sign those 2 long term (i'd be shocked if detroit would be thinking of squeezing them with a 1-2 yr cheap extension)? To your point earlier, if Detroit were thinking of squeezing either player, their respective agents would be on the phones ASAP to see who would like to OS and im sure the line up would be a long one! in this case though OS would have to be around $9,161,833 to even make detroit blink and also so as not to go into the next category and require 2x 1st++. Simple fact is, we were caught in the mushy middle with our pants down with 2 guys that are not quite emerging superstars, but still attractive enough that the comp was a no brainer and the amount of the OS sufficiently poisonous that matching was always going to be super tough. Again, well played Armstrong! The lesson to learn for every team is: If you're really tight to the cap, you better get your RFA business sorted early, otherwise what happened to oilers may well happen to you!

Yup and in this case whatever drai or Bouch get offered had zero bearing on the HollyBro situation and fact is; top players get paid top money and if you dont want to pay top dollar, they'll go elsewhere? Some guys will take a bit of a cut to stay/go with a contender but not more than $1M p.a. if we're being realistic? Thats about as good as a "home town" discount as you'll get IMO and in our case getting a guy to take $1M less is even harder because EDM is not a "desired city destination. Also, if we are going to quibble over $1M, then I'd rather they'd stop signing the likes of Perry and give that extra cash to Drai, Bouch or whoever makes a real diff to the team if it means they'll stay? I do agree that hollyBro should have been a priority over Perry, Ryan and Brown and signing skinner and Arvi was basically sending the message to DH that we want you to spend another year or so toiling in the trenches at min wage and so an offer from a team that doubles your salary AND promises a good chance of top 6 mins is going to be hard to turn down no matter how loyal and happy you are with the team? Again, another lesson to be learned hopefully? WTF are you talking about. Bro and Holly if for one year, we can match no problem. Once Drai Bouch get their new deals and trying to get things done with the young ones becomes the problem in the 2nd year. So they are both gone. Too much to the top guys, not enough for the young ones that really show promise. your logic makes no sense to me either? 1yr or 2yrs what changes? the cap hit today stays the same? I get that next year Drai and bouch's contracts kick in so you are once again up against the wall, but in both 1 and 2yr scenarios you'll be left with the same options next season of A. paying them what they're worth (and there's a chance they'll prove they're worth more than the existing OS - especially in DH's case), or B. you end up with nothing or trading them? At least with the 2yr option, If they do shine, then you can dump someone else and make room for them knowing they're under cost certainty for one more year? The only way 2yr gets tricky is if they shiit the bed so bad that you cant even give them away for nothing! otherwise you're going to be in more or less the same boat with a 1yr contract, except your position of negotiation will be even more diminished

Anyways, very interesting from Bob today... probably 1/2 of why we lost DH and Broberg.
Listening to Bob's Post Mortem on these Offer sheets from yesterday. I found this to be an interesting quote.
On the subject of developing Savoie as opposed to how Holland handled Holloway and Broberg. He said the Oilers new regime will look to emulate the Stars system where players like Stankoven are over ripen and brought up ONLY if they are seemingly 100% ready and able to stay up. Not like before where players would go up and down and up and down. He then dropped this quote:
"there needs to be a path [for these prospects], a full sort of total buy in, and not a FIEFDOM mentality of respective different units within the organization, I fully expect that out of the combination of Jeff Jackson and Stan Bowman"
Sounds like Bob is accusing the Holland regime as having a fiefdom mentality and treating prospects differently or apart from the main team.

You can if you are not squeezing him/them to minimal offers. If this is the case then of course wait. Who wouldn't. Point is there is no $ and have to squeeze them. Beating a dead horse here. Thought about signing Barrie or Schulz and at the deadline getting Larsson to bring us over the top. They are all in their early 30's and falling off a cliff already. You sure you guys want to sign the oldest team in the league to the most expensive contracts? It is ridiculous. Straight up, not off season fun. No joking. This is real talk. Off course the majority will defend it, I don't. Spread the money and opportunity to move up around. Best player in the league, give him the most opportunities to win, not just win now. Management says we did our best now the window is gone, you guys have 50% of the cap. No youth, no depth, no cups. Yes other teams have lost players trying to chase cups, price of doing business, here we are doing it because we are too top heavy, not enough room for others to grow and succeed. Who takes all the PP time? Who takes every ounce of the best minutes? Think our top guys get tired because of it, another drawback with not enough opportunity.

That can be done. Or no, just give them their max value and call it a day. If not you see what Drai can get you in his last year at 8.5 then leave the other team to deal with the old age problems and max contract. Bet we can get a boatload. Young, fast and strong instead of older, slower, top money to guys. Maybe Drai will be less than projected, hope this is the case. There is no "I" in winning. They won their trophies. Yep, that's the motto as our guys approach their 30's (no "I" in team). Just lost our 2 young prospects that we have developed for 4-5 years and you guys want to argue. Piss off. The opening was there so another team took it. Reports say there were 2 other teams to do the same thing. Leave enough $ for your young guys. I'm sure Detroit is leaving enough $ for Seider, just in case. And Raymond to match our 2 players. How about Swayman for those looking for a top goalie. Much better prospects than what we just gave up. Better to attack a team unprotected, Wings have $ set aside.

When you are a cup contender you have star players that are making big money and you need talent and depth in all positions and this is expensive. Usually as a team builds towards this model the majority of players are vets and therefore there are older players. Being a contender brings with it many problems and cap issues are one of the biggest problems. Most of the teams in the league would love to have our problems and that is another reason we were targeted. What we are going through is what every top team goes through. It's tough at the top, but I'm glad we're here. Just like so many teams before us you go from contender to pretender. Make it to the final, not to be seen there again for years if ever. Aside from Florida and Tampa last year. One key difference aside from their losses is having the funds to invest in young players to remain relevant for longer. Not going to spell it out any longer. NHL is a skilled fast and competitive league, need your ducks in a row. In 2017 after our run, took some years to get back into the playoffs chance at success. We could drop off just like that. This year shows promise, after Drai/Bouch might have to suck it up for awhile on the pretender aspect. We'll enjoy a couple/few years were our core players are locked in and we will be a legitimate threat during that time. Our core will age and we will depend more on our prospects, hopefully we can stock our cupboards, but that will be the struggles we will face. I'm of the mindset that we should enjoy it now while our superstars are in their prime years. We should see 3-4 years of quality contention and I personally hope for more, but we will see how it plays out. Eventually we will see a decline in our core and that's just how it goes.

There's been tons of stuff from various sources stating that SB and JJ plan to run the prospects and farm "differently"? It remains to be seen? It's also interesting that the more stuff comes out, the more it sounds like upper management was less than happy with the final year of KH? I know its easy to throw bricks and blame the guy who leaves, but until JJ came on board, I got the impression the old guard were very much in love with KH and now he's definitely been sort of thrown under the bus by a lot of the oiler mouthpieces, which is a 180 from before JJ sat on the throne? I was never a big fan of KH but he did get within one game, so there's really only one way SB and JJ can top that so I hope they know what they're doing and "one up" him, otherwise he's going to have the last laugh regardless (and yes T, if JJ/SB fail miserably, I think KH would crack a smile or at least a smirk)

This will be our last year as quality contention for a bit. So in a 2 years, top 3 guys signed to huge deals and the team suffers as a result. Yeah too much in the now, not looking forward enough. Not enough players in their prime years. Pay them huge, not enough youth or depth to take the reigns.
It is not out of whack that Eks takes a step back this year at 34. He should be good but does not mean he won't slow down a bit. Just like Henrique. Ryan is cooked, Perry is cooked. Not being negative, just reality. Thought is to bring Barrie to the team since he is familiar with our guys but at 32 he has dropped off already so might not be the best choice. Our team is getting old fast.

You are so upset regarding the top guys getting paid that you are not looking at the complete picture. Hyman, Kulak, Skinner,Henrique, Perry, Ryan,Janmark,Brown(x2), Kane all signed as free agents. When their contracts end others will be signed. Now if you read what the dr. Just wrote, the AHL team will be concentrating on training our draft picks. The sky is not falling.

For one; there are no guarantees the team will be better if drai or anyone takes a lot less? Reality is, superstars in any sport may give $1-2M as home town discount in order to stay with their team mates and friends and try to win together, but no one in this day and age is going to sacrifice a ton for the "greater good"!. If anything, society is getting more self-centred not less? Ironically what you're proposing is a form of socialism and I thought you hated the politicians like trudeau, starmer et al who have the political philosophy that the "haves" now have to give everything to the have-nots?? Socialism is doomed to failure in society and it would be doomed to failure in the NHL as well

Signing young players and paying them the $, letting go of the older players approaching 30 to keep you in contention for years to come. This is the way. 30 yr old players deserve less. Their decline may come sooner than later, if later like in Hyms that's why he is a gem. Eks is a gem, they can fall off quick. No one seems to understand this. Our cupboards are pretty bare, this has been brought up many times. As for those wanting to play with McD/Drai, Edmonton is about the worst destination as foggy has told us again and again. Yes at the end of the day, it is working last and this year as McD/Drai are in their very best prime. Aside from that, wishful thinking.
Self centered, yeah so enjoy it while the times are good. Chips go down, them no one comes. Trying to avoid a repeat of 2017 to 2020, sue me.
As it is McD 12.5 Drai 8.5, Nurse 9.25, Eks 6. Those are our 4 highest paid players. That's 42% of the cap amongst our 4 highest paid guys. We have a real good chance. There has only been one team winning the cup with 50% of the cap, most are in the 40-44% range. So the time is now. Prospects or not. As is our D is average at best so even with all this in our favor as our top guys are cheap over time, we still have weak holes on our team. It was not enough to see Broberg/Holloway gone to make things work, it was getting away from Ceci to give us some flexibility.

Not sure your age but do you remember the 80s? We didn't pay those guys and they left. Not 4 years of doom, try 20 (ish)

Excuse my ignorance fellas but what does "Fiefdom" mean/stand for, lol? For real? I must be getting old. Ever watched Game of Thrones? If Cersei liked you, unlikely as that was for some inexplicable reason, you could expect special treatment and opened doors and plenty of other perks, at least while it lasted. On her bad side, more likely, death would be a mercy compared to all the other crap she could pull on a person she disliked. Not as extreme as that in the NHL obviously, but the basic implied accusation is that Ken played favorites for reasons that can't be objectively articulated as between our players / prospects. Not sure how much credence I put into that. I liked Broberg. But he wasn't where we hoped he could / would be the year we acquired Ekholm. Getting Ekholm was a godsend for our win now window, but it also amounted to stuffing Broberg into the development closet. I agree he was mismanaged to a very real degree. But I'm not sure "fiefdom" is entirely fair to say of Ken after his departure.

I'm so confused!!! Never watched one episode of Game of Thrones. True story, saving it for when I am older. I know a thing or two about sword fights and porno though so does that count? I've been featured on film doing both, again, true story. Kidding, or am I!? Fiefdom. Sounds like a swear. Could be a religion. Perhaps an island, where all our cap problems are solved. Rhymes with Klefbom so I like it. What is Fiefdom, for the win, Alex.
