It's not hysteria or worries. Just a close projection. There's cap crunches then there's extreme cap crunches. If a few of our prospects work out then it's going to make everything easier. But the 1 mil salary for the bulk of the team is still going to happen. Just like we had to do after we signed McD to his first deal, taking gambles and flyers on fringe players due to limited cap. Did we miss the playoffs back then, yes we did. Sure would be nice to have Holly/Brobers signed for 1.3-1.5 each for 3 years including 2026. Would help now and then. But what's done is done. Going to need some impact players on the cheap, no way around it. Did we make it to game 7 of the finals with some flyers on cheap fringe players? Yes. Yes we did. Star players, top5 players, in the league are going to get paid. To have a great team, you need to have one of those guys, and we have the luxury of having two of those guys. No, no we didn't. Who? If you are talking about a couple of players that play D and pk but do nothing else sure. Those aren't fringe players, they are specialized role players. There's a difference. To have a great team you need depth, words out of McD's mouth a hundred times. In 2026 if the cap is close to 100 mil, 1 mil players may not be easy to find in the first place.

Connor Brown was a castoff. Broberg wasn't an NHL player. Janmark career spare part. Foegele. Derek Ryan. Pickard. Important contributors on our team, but lets not overstate what they are in the scope of the NHL as a whole.

Connor Brown was a castoff. Broberg wasn't an NHL player. Janmark career spare part. Foegele. Derek Ryan. Pickard. Important contributors on our team, but lets not overstate what they are in the scope of the NHL as a whole. Brown was a 4 mil player, say of that what you will Broberg was developed by us for 5 years and was starting to pay dividends, enough that another team pays 4.6 mil for him now
Janmark is the best defensive forward on the team and is a valuable 1 mil player. So much so he makes 1.45 for 3 more years (a raise). Not easy to find these players
Foegele got 20 goals and made almost 3 mil, now it's 3.75mil
Ryan pk specialist, we know he is getting old but he has never been a fringe player in his career but yeah he is trending down (and his pay reflects that)
Picks got his shot and outdid JC, surprising yes and one example where a 1 mil player outplays a 5 mil player. Goalies are voodoo.
Many of these guys don't make 1 mil, they make way more. I'm talking specifically about 1 mil players for 2026 that we will need. You get what you pay for. Stars get paid, few others do too, the majority at 1 mil you get what you pay for. Maybe Pod can be one of those gem players for us too, maybe not. Would be awesome if we got Foegele's production for 1 mil. There is a chance... Or is he Virtanen or Perlini 2.0
In the past when we were crunched it was guys like Chiasson that make 750k-1mil and outperform, not often though. We had more of Spooner, Reider, Kubalik, Hass, Brandon Manning, Nyguard, Grandlund, Shore, Turris, Sceviour, etc. To me these are fringe NHL players, not very good and after they left the Oilers no other NHL team wanted them so either they bolt to Europe or become minor league players. This is usually what you get for around 1 mil.

Reported by DollynyTV, Coach Knoblauch confirmed in press conference today that there is in fact a PTO coming soon. It's likely the deal is already done and they are getting signing done and submitting it to the league. Ooooh Who's it gonna be?!

It was on Bob Stauffers podcast today. It's a defenseman according to the coach

Dermott makes the most sense due to the connections and playing the right or left side. All these guys are 3rd pairing though ideally.
Stupid Leafs got Robertson signed for 875k. Holloway gets 5 goals and gets 2.3 mil with an OS. Leafs get to squeeze their player whom blew Holly out of the water with the same Leafs cap issues we have. It's not fair, lol.

And I think I agree Toley, Hollywood way better than Robertson with way more upside even though the numbers don’t necessarily show that gap?

Dermott does sound like he'd make the most sense on a PTO based on his past connections with coach K and JJ, but more importantly for me, is that he can and is comfortable playing both sides. Love versatility throughout the line-up, it opens up many more options. Not sure he's second pairing worthy and that's really what we're looking for but who knows, maybe he is and he instantly fits in perfectly with Nurse (lol). Speaking of Darnell, I'm reading this morn he is likely to miss the start of camp but will be good to go before the end of TC as he is still recovering from a lingering injury from the playoffs. That stinks, I didn't even know he was injured. We need him at the top of his game (spoke captain obvious) as Defense is clearly the weak spot on our team, as per usual. It will never be as good or better then our offense and we don't need it to be, but it clearly needs improvement. I look at it on paper and just think GULP. Cmon Stan, give us some good news soon!

Which Toronto is the least likely to squeeze a player for a decent contract.

Which Toronto is the least likely to squeeze a player for a decent contract. It's taken Robertson 2 - 3? more years to get to the same GP as Holloway. The guy never plays so it's hard to evaluate him. Holloway may not have the high ceiling ,but you know what he's gonna bring 60+ nights a year.
