Many of these assists that you are trying to pass off as insignificant are anything but. You do realize some assists are from him either lugging the puck up the ice starting the play or from him passing the puck out of the D zone again starting the play. Those types of assists are actually very important and should not be mocked or held against someone's ability and value. Some. And those that are not should not be bragged about. Guys like Russell and to a lesser extent Larsson seem NOT to be able to get those second assists because their breakout pass is 4 feet off target. I recall Barrie nailing several of those leading to a goal because the pass wasn't 'flubbed.' There are other talented defensemen in league playing with skilled forwards who did NOT rack up the points that Barrie did. Granted some of those points are convenient just as every other player in the league benefits from second assists at some point... almost like the league at some point in its history saw some value in guys being engaged enough in the play to warrant the stat. You need guys like Barrie to get into the playoffs. Once you are there, you do need some physical players also. One of my greater frustrations over the decade of darkness is when management said "we need more skill" so they dumped all their defensively responsible players to acquire said skill only to turn around and say "we need to be more defensively responsible" and then dump the skill for defense. The Oilers are now in a position where they have the ability to build a BALANCED roster. The team would benefited from having a stay at home defenseman paired with an offensive guy and then further balanced by having a defensively responsible forward on the forward lines to reduce the risk on a pinch and allow a more complex cycle game down low. Larsson in gone, move on. Resign Barrie for a shorter term if possible. If possible, upgrade Bear but that won't come cheap.

Seravalli seems to think the Oilers may be a darkhorse candidate for Dougie Hamilton.
Looking at the numbers. It could work.
After the Smith signing, we're down to 9.2M. Add Klefbom's LTIR to that (not sure how that'll work though unless we take him off LTIR and put him back on before the season starts), we'd be up to 13.3. Then a Neal buyout will put us up to 17.1M.

Jani Hakanpaa? Seems like a right-handed Oleksiak who seems to have relatively flown under the radar.

Nobody is denying it's a tough loss. The issue is that is is a loss that could not be avoided. Larsson was leaving, period. This is the way he chose to leave. I can't see why more people aren't pissed at him for not at least giving Holland a chance to trade him and get something back for him. Instead he f*cked us by going to Seattle and leaving us empty handed

Instead he f*cked us by going to Seattle and leaving us empty handed I guess he just wanted to chose the city he was going to. To sign in Edmonton and rely on Holland to send you to a good city might not be his thing, even with a NTC to certain cities, he does get to chose the specific team he wants to go to. I don't know if he left for more than Holland was offering or not?

Larsson really did screw us over it seems, Holland has been trying for months, since January, to sign Larsson:

My understanding was he was the 3rd Pair but I’d take him over Gudbranson whose often played 2nd pair? (And yeah I know you’ve touted him for a long while mom). it’s always nice to have guys with a mean streak in the team and once playoffs hit, they become more valuable as the game slows down and gets nastier and it becomes more suited to their style
